Baby Tyler was born on 1st July at 28 weeks old, weighing approx. 2lbs whilst we were on holiday in Spain. His condition In addition to being born 12 weeks prematurely, Tyler also was born with a condition called Hydrops Fetalis. Hydrops develops when too much fluid leaves the bloodstream and goes into the tissues. Tyler's symptoms at birth included severe edema (swelling) overall especially in his abdomen, and respiratory distress (difficulty breathing). Although this condition was quickly under control and in time receded. The combination his premature birth, the initial Hydrops Fetalis, Tyler went on to develop another condition common to premature babies called Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BDP). Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia abnormal development of lung tissue. It is characterised by inflammation and scarring in the lungs and develops mainly in premature babies who are born with underdeveloped lungs or who experience respiratory problems shortly after birth can develop BPD, sometimes called chronic lung disease. Although his lungs were very badly damaged, his condition at 18 weeks old was stable albeit he was still in intensive care on a respirator. He was growing well and was a healthy weight at nearly 7lbs which was positive sign. The doctors said time would only tell if his lungs would or could improve and though the prognosis was not good and any progress made would be very slow. The treatment Tyler received in Spain (in particular at the Alicante General University Hospital) was brilliant and we cannot fault the care and attention both he (and I) received. Sadly and untimely, Tyler suffered a heart attack in the early hours of Thursday 1st November and the doctors were not able to save him. Tyler was a very strong, clever, funny and brave little boy who fought every step of the way and overcame every obstacle that was thrown his way without ever giving up
